Greenslopes is Australia’s largest private hospital, located in metropolitan Brisbane, QLD. It is owned by Ramsay Health Care, part of their high quality portfolio of private hospitals.
Ramsay Health Care, and Greenslopes in particular, have a strong focus on the environment and sustainable development. In 1999, Greenslopes was voted Australia’s best private hospital in the Australian Private Hospitals’ Association, the Hospital Quality of Excellence Award.
In 2006, Trevor West, Greenslopes Foodservice Manager, was looking for an opportunity to recycle the foam cups they were using in their staff canteen. During discussions with Trevor, the opportunity to recover and recycle EPS packing material received by their stores department was identified and added to this initiative.
Dart introduced Trevor to Leo Sines from Carton Warehouse, the leading EPS recycler in Brisbane. Leo provided a cage for storing the polystyrene waste, which he collects twice weekly. Through Trevor’s enthusiastic stewardship, and the strong support from staff members recycling their waste, Greenslopes have been able to divert an estimated 100 cubic metres of EPS which otherwise would be sent to landfill.
The attached photos show the bins in which the foam cups are collected, the cage which holds the EPS waste ready for collection, and the various stages of collection, storage and processing of the EPS waste.

Foam cup recycling is happening. Congratulations to Greenslopes for their efforts to divert their EPS from landfill to reuse.
